Favourite Deity?
« on: March 22, 2007, 09:27:19 PM »
Hi all,

I have seen that some people or family have a particular deity that they will pray to. Do you guys have one? Or ur families particularly pray to one? Is there any reasons behind why u pray to this particular deity?

Hi guyz!

Hey gd question..my family actualli has more than a few deities in the prayer room, but i have seen many families which have just one deity on their altar. Many of my relatives also have just one picture or one idol of Krishna.

As many of us noe, the different gods(or demigods) we have in our religion are there because of our many 'perceptions' of God. If we have a worry on education, we pray to Saraswati; if we have a wish to see our family prosper, we give offerings to Lakshmi etc. But all these forms stem from one God is it not?

But with soo many perceptions of God, y do some families keep just an idol on the altar?
It is said in the Gita that the hearts of men are easy to waver, and to reach the supreme abode of God one must never lose his/her focus. It is also said that all the demigods that Man noe of emanates from one source, the Supreme Brahman.  This is the underlying reason why some families onli worship one particular deity. It doesnt matter if they pray to Ganesh, to Shiva or Krishna... All are manifestations of God... and praying to the particular deity, they keep the focus.

Of course, there are also families who pray to one deity because of the undying bhakti they have to the deity.. the 'family deity'...

Cheers! ;)

Hi guys.

I have many different deities in my alter. Moreover, since i am from a very mixed background , i was brought up believing in all forms. However, the main deity in my alter is mariamman. Guess she is the form my parents believe. In my opinion, i think that god was given such many forms by humans so that the  mind  is able to connect and focus in the divine in the way it desires. If we can see,the various deities have various emotions or concepts attached. For example, ganesh - symbolises overcoming obstacles, letchmi- wealth , saraswathi - purity, education, concentration , hanuman- cotrol of the monkey mind and durga - strength and love. Therefore, usually the emotions we seek or possess will manifest in form we choose to focus our prayers on. But what matters is not who we worship but the motive behind our prayers. There could be many forms of him, but all forms are HIS . The important message here is forms of god are created to enable us to control our mind n heart and use them to focus on the ultimate. And prayers should always be performed with pure heart n soul.

cheers.
